Shibanxi, Shixi oder auch Shixizhen ist der Ausgangspunkt der Jiayang Kohlebahn, ein Relikt aus der Zeit des "Großen Sprungs nach vorn". Gebaut mit Hilfe des Stahlwerkes Chongqing erschießt die 20 km lange Bahn eine sonst fast unzugängliche Berglandschaft mit kleinen Dörfern, Reisterrassen und Bananenstauden. Wenn auch der Kohlentransport vom Endpunkt fast zum Erliegen gekommen ist, so sind doch täglich vier Personenzugpaare zu erleben, die oft als PmG verkehren.

Shibanxi, Shixi or Shixizhen is the starting point for the Jiayang coal railway; a relic from the times of the "great leap forward". Built with the help of the steelworks in Chonqqing, this small, 20 km long line serves an almost inaccessible mountainside with small villages, rice paddies and Banana plants. Although the freight traffic (coal) from the end of the line is almost non-existent today, there are still four daily passenger trains often running as a "mixed".

The catenary extends from Shixi for four kilometres to this station. The two minutes stopover made this picture with the loading building possible.
In Mifengyan befindet sich eine Spitzkehre, und die Lokomotive setzt um. Das ganze Schauspiel dauert nur wenige Minuten. Im Bild fährt die Lok gerade am Zug vorbei und beleuchtet die Wagen auf dem ansonsten völlig unbeleuchteten Bahnhof effektvoll. The switchback in Mifengyang necessitates the running around of the engine. This takes but a few minutes. As can be seen in the picture the engine provides the illumination of the train as the station itself doesn't have any lights.
Der Zug ist nach dem umsetzen wieder abfahrbereit, das Lichtsignal zeigt grün, Heizer und Bahnhofschef warten darauf, dass sich die Ausländer mit ihren Stativen endlich wieder in den Zug begeben ... The train is ready for departure, the signal is showing green, and the fireman and station master are waiting eagerly for the foreigners with their silly contraptions (i.e. tripod and camera) to get into the train again ...
In Mifengyang wird von den Anwohnern nach Kohlestückchen in der Schlacke gesucht. Die Lokomotive hat gerade umgesetzt und wird in wenigen Sekunden nach Shibanxi weiter dampfen. The people living in Mifengyang are keen for the small pieces of coal that can still be found in the slag. The engine has just been running around the train and will shortly continue its journey towards Shibanxi.

Das Klassikermotiv der Bahn schlechthin. Ausfahrt aus dem Tunnel ca. 2 km hinter Mifengyang. Für den 14 Uhr-Zug steht die Sonne optimal - so sie denn in Südchina einmal scheint. Noch ein Blick auf die Gleislage, bitte: Schauen Sie sich einmal die Relativbewegungen der Wagenkästen genauer an. Ganz besonders der nur knapp angeschnittene Wagen im linken Bild zeugt davon, dass seekranke Passagiere besser zu Fuß gehen sollten. The classic shot of this railway. Leaving the tunnel ca. 2 km behind Mifengyang. The sun is ideal for the 2 pm passenger train – if the sun is eventually shining in South China. Please take note of the track condition and the resulting movement of the cars relative to each other. Especially the car on the far left is a reminder for all those people, who get seasick easily, not to take the train but to go by foot.
Der Zug aus Kohle- und Personenwagen fährt in die Kopfstation Mifengyan ein. Auf dem Bild kann man alle drei Lichtsignale des Bahnhofes erkennen: eines am Zugende, eines in Bildmitte - das sind die Einfahrsignale - und eines am rechten Bildrand - das Ausfahrsignal. Die Signale werden immer nur kurz vor Ankunft eines Zuges eingeschaltet und sind ansonsten dunkel. A mixed train with passenger and coal cars is reaching the station Mifengyang. Here you can see all three color light signals which control the traffic in and around the station. The one at the end of the train and the one in the center of the picture are the station entry signals. The on the right side of the picture is the station exit signal. They're switched on only shortly before the arrival of a train, otherwise they're dark.
